For Veterans

Veterans Transportation

Rides to VA medical centers for Fairfield County veterans — provided at no cost to you.

The Fairfield County Veterans Service Office is proud to serve you, the veteran, with transportation to the various VA medical centers for your medical appointments.

The Fairfield County Veterans Service Commission has implemented the following rules. The van driver is not authorized to and cannot change any of these rules.

How to schedule a ride

All scheduling for transportation must be made through the Veterans Service Office, at least forty-eight (48) hours prior to your VA appointment.

Call 740-652-7920 as soon as you receive your appointment date — and please do not make arrangements directly with the van driver.

Important rules

  • Notify the Veterans Service Office immediately after you receive your appointment date from the VA if you want transportation. This includes cancellations. Do not make arrangements with the van driver.
  • All veterans are scheduled on a first come, first served basis, regardless of who had their appointment scheduled first with the VA.
  • You must call the Veterans Service Office before your scheduled appointment to verify it. This is your responsibility, not the office's. The driver will contact you the day before with your pick-up time.
  • If you or the VA cancels an appointment, please advise this office so we can take you off the schedule and make room for others. The VA does not notify this office when they change your scheduled appointment.
  • The van driver is a county employee paid by the Veterans Service Commission. You are not obligated to pay the driver in any way for their time or services.
  • Veterans are picked up at their place of residence and returned there after their appointments. Any exceptions must be approved by the Veterans Service Office.

A note on VA travel pay

If you receive travel pay from the VA for a scheduled appointment, we strongly recommend you inform the travel section at the VA that you were provided transportation by this office and that you do not collect travel pay. Collecting travel pay while riding our vans is fraud, and under federal law you could be punished.

VA travel reimbursement

Reimbursement for mileage or public transportation may be paid to:

  • Veterans with service-connected disabilities rated at 30% or more
  • Veterans traveling for treatment of a service-connected condition
  • Veterans receiving a VA pension
  • Veterans traveling for scheduled compensation or pension examinations
  • Veterans whose income does not exceed the maximum VA pension rate

You cannot collect VA travel reimbursement if you travel on the Veterans Service Commission vans.
