Our goal

The goal of the County Veterans Service Officer is to assist you in filling out the claim forms and attaching the necessary evidence to make the claim as complete as possible, so it can go immediately to the Rating Board for adjudication.

Service-connected compensation

Service-connected compensation covers disabilities resulting from an injury or disease incurred in, or aggravated by, military service — in the line of duty, and not as the result of misconduct.

There are five ways to receive a service-connected rating:

  • Direct
  • Aggravation
  • Presumptive
  • Secondary
  • Injury as a result of treatment

A service-connected claim can be re-opened if the disability has worsened, or — for a claim that has been denied — by providing new and relevant evidence to support the claim.

Common items needed to file a claim

  • Marriage license
  • Birth certificates of minor children
  • Death certificate
  • All supporting medical evidence
  • DD-214
  • Bank account and routing number for direct deposit (voided check)
  • Proof that an injury resulted or was aggravated due to service
  • Social Security numbers for all dependents
